The research nerd here. The hot dog is a sandwich. MIght add, mustard belongs on a hot dog. Case closed as Mike would say.

Quote from below sourse (Tasting Table):

Few dishes have a format as straightforward as a sandwich. At its most fundamental, it's as simple as cooking gets — ready-to-eat foods like cured meats, cheese, and vegetables placed between two slices of bread. Yet, take a gander at sandwich recipes, and it's clear how many renditions can be attributed to such a template. The filling can be an elaborate cooked food, like sautéed fish or fried chicken. The doughy vessels can encompass dozens of bread types, although most maintain they should be of the leavened variety.

Many of the sandwich classics are undisputed — no one's gonna claim that a Reuben or sweet and savory club sandwich doesn't belong to the category. However, if you start to stray from the most quintessential examples, the definition becomes more controversial. According to the dictionary, hot dogs are sandwiches, although the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council proposes they've evolved out of the term, and Anthony Bourdain similarly took a stand on the hot dog sandwich debate.

Only a hot dawg would claim that a hot dog has it's own category. NOT. Hakuna matata. =)

Me to attendant at the turn: "What kind of sandwiches do you have?"

Attendant: "We have ham, turkey, roast beef or PB&J"

    Me: "Humm...."

Attendant: "We also have hamburgers and hot dogs"

Yeah... culture has dictated it's own category (along with burgers).

I tend to only eat hot dogs either at a baseball game or at the turn, playing golf.

I voted "No" as I don't think a hot dog is sandwich. Call it what you want a properly cooked one with your favorite toppings is pretty tasty.

I vote yes, only out of the spirit of the term as opposed to an attempt at a definition. The way I see it, if you are placing meat, cheese, condiments, etc. into a piece or pieces of bread to allow for a portable, handheld meal, it’s a sandwich.
Essentially, by utilizing bread to negate the need for a plate and utensils, you are following the the example of John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich, and in so doing, making a sandwich.

Just because it is placed in between 2 sides of a bread bun does not become a sandwich.

If they were two different pieces of bread, then maybe that can go down that path.
But it is a design holder of whatever you place in it.

A sandwich by my definition has 2 separate pieces of bread with the main meal in between them.
A Coney has never been called a sandwich according to my father-in-law who is from New Jersey.

That statement is a good enough reason for me.....
