After playing at the Dormie Club for three days and suffering much pain, plus playing golf like I did over 35 years ago, it is time to reevaluate my future in golf. I met with the pain management clinic I go to on Tuesday upon my return and am scheduled for another epidural on Thursday. We are leaving for a 12 day cruise to Spain, Portugal and Morocco and hope this will ease the pain in the other hip. Upon our return they will be evaluating the progress and potentially doing injections in both of my hips. We will evaluate those results to see if I can return to golf at that time in mid August. We may continue the rest because we are leaving for another 12 day trip to Europe on September. Could be late September when I get to play again. Hopefully the steroids will work. There is a medium procedure that my surgeon can do to relieve some of the pain. Golf is not good for the old back. At least will not be playing during the hottest time of the year and can exercise and do PT. Hakuna , matata.

Sorry to hear about the pain and hopefully you can find a combination of treatment and pace of play that will allow you to stay connected to the game. I remember how Ben Hogan spent his later years at Shady Oaks Country Club (near me) hanging out in the clubhouse and having a spot outside where he would a small bucket of balls occasionally. We have some locals here is Phoenix that are allowed to drive their private carts pretty close to the greens so they play 9 holes from the forward tees and then head home. We also have a Putting Club with a large 9 hole green and some of our most mature residents have taken to just being part of that. I'm probably just a few years away from giving up my week at Bandon and transitioning into more casual golf. Good luck and hopefully you can enjoy some form of golf in the future.

Well, you already know to follow advice. Take care and recuperate.

My goal is to still be on course till the end like Bing Crosby and the Jack Lemmon character in The Story of Bagger Vance. Like the 95 year old guy that scored his first Hole In One on his last round last year, that would leave me with a smile on my face. Even if I have to use driver for a 110 yard hole.

Wishing you a happy return to the game this fall. We have a local driving range that has been around for decades. The founder has a quote on the wall, people don’t die from playing golf, they die because they stop playing golf. See you on course sometime.

    Hello my friend,

Sorry to hear about the physical issues you are having. You've shared your journey to health with us and I was looking forward to hearing that everything is progressing well. Hopefully, the solutions your medical team is suggesting will allow you to enjoy the wonderful vacations you have planned. As you know, golf will be there when you're ready and I look forward to seeing you back on the links.

Hope you feel better soon Chuck. I'm sure going to Europe will take your mind off it a little at least. Looking forward to see you out on the course again when things feel better.

Enjoy the trips and do whatever you can do as far as golf goes. Health is the most important thing in life. Do whatever you can do as far as golf goes. Even if it's a bucket of balls at the range and some putts on the putting green and just a few holes, you'll figure it out. As they say, "There's more than one way to skin a cat".

Chuck I feel you , just a few years younger (73) and at the point where playing more than 2 days in a row is just too painful in the hips,
Hoping to get in the Team Titleist invitional this year as I think it will be the last year I try, then I will just play once or twice a week for fun
    Have fun on your trips

    Chuck,

Sorry to hear that physical limitations are restricting your ability, and maybe your desire, to play golf. I hope that you enjoy your vacations and that the medical plan will allow you to play when you are ready to return. Remember that, as much as 'we golfers' (myself included) want to think that life revolves around golf, golf is but a small part of our life!

Thanks for all the well wishes.

And as for that POS sign on the driving range, that is a bunch of crap. People die from lack of activity, whether it be mental or physical. In the words of that famous, Veteran, I shall return. Will not have to worry about hanging around to score my first hole in one till I am 85, have four in the bag already. I just need to step away, rest and re energize my body. Both my pain management and PT doctors are in agreement. Will continue on exercise program and PT.

Just stepping away to let the process do it's thing. I have given up walking, get VIP riding privileges, play from the 5400 yard tees and only play three days a week in the mornings when the weather is cooler. Laying off this summer will be good for the body and clear all the bad golf juju out of my head. Not dead yet. ha..ha..ha..ha.. Getting ready for TTI 2025.......

Had surgery in 2019 on back. Brought out back support that I used in recovery and put it on yesterday. Thought maybe allowing my back some support might help and by golly it did. Walked around block in my neighborhood with my wife, very slowly and with some discomfort. Getting prepared for some steps on our trip to Spain/Portugal and Northern Africa. Am looking so forward to this cruise. Visit scheduled for PT on Thursday and until we leave. Think will use the support for a while in healing process. Really feels good. You guys are the best with your positive vibes. That is what TT is all about. No rushing it. =)

Good Luck! I feel your pain, even in my Late-50's I already know my clock is ticking. The body is worn out, not going to fight it too hard. Probably means more boat/travel time, but it's all good!
