  1. With so many choices of Scotty Cameron do you prefer Blade or Mallet putters?

    Just curious…

I have a 2021 Phantom X 5.5, but it’s been retired. Prefer a blade, and have a Super Select Newport 2, a Special Select NP 2 (probably going to sell it), and a 2021 Champions Choice Newport 2 that I have been using as my gamer.

I use to play the blade for years but as I got older I switched to the mallet. Just picked up the Phantom 5.5 and been very happy with the results.

Mallet these days. I feel more control over the face thru the swing especially long lag putts. I was always a blade putter and never tried a mallet but when I did I can say I won’t be changing back to a blade. I still love the look of a blade more than a mallet but the results on a mallet speak for themselves so the blades stay at home and the mallet (Scotty Phantom 5s) goes to the course with me every time.

I love the look of my Newport 2, but I think it might be time to switch to a mallet. Brad Faxon has talked about how the blades are harder to line up. I have that problem. Scottie and Rory have made the switch with noticeable results. And most of the top amateur players play a mallet. I think it says a lot that the top players are using mallets. Obviously personal preference but the easier alignment of the mallet and the face-balanced head might push me that way.

I will probably do a putter fitting at my club. They have a SAMS Putt Labs (spelling?) for the fitting to get the right set up.

Chris - Great question! For the longest time I was all about the blade putter. It's a classic. I loved the timeless look to them and all the greats played with them. I used to game a version of blade for about 12 years with the last one being SC 2016 Select Mallet 2.

I got curious and got a fitting when I was in Sea Island in 2023 and was fitted into the Golo6. I never thought the mallet would be the one for me but I have more confidence and love the feel and look of the mallet. So much so that I will be checking out the new phantom line and may add one of them to the collection!

I have been a Mallet guy all my life, even long before it was cool. To me it was a comfortable and confidence-inspiring look. As a teenager I used a Wilson Billy Casper mallet and an small Acushnet Bullseye mallet. I currently have 4 mallets: a 2009 Scotty Cameron Fastback 1.5, a 2018 Bettinardi SS #33 (I think), a SC Phantom 5.5 (the old Justin Thomas model), and a SC Super Select GoLo 6.5 (my current gamer) -- and traded away a Never Compromise mallet from 2003, an Odyssey mallet from 2010, and a png Anser Redwood from 2007 or 2008.

I've tried them both. Started with the newport 2, went a tad bigger with the newport plus, then a phantom 5x, before finally settling on the Concept X CV-01. I just like the stability of a mallet and better visual alignment at address.

I have been playing for over forty years so I started with blade putters. I have always played them. I have tried Mallets but always go back to blades.

Mallet for me .... would like to maybe try a longer shaft though (currently GOLO is 34" ..... perhaps a 35" next time)

Team blade for over 30 years. But recently been playing around with mallets and the first thing I noticed is bigger sweet spot on mallets

Good question Chris, I'm definitely a blade guy. I started off using Scotty Napas and progressed to a Newport, and that looks pretty big at address so was never going to a mallet.

I've played the same Scotty Newport blade putter for 25 years. So looks wise I am team blade. Watching what players are using on tour makes me want to try a mallet tho.

I game with a mid mallet. I love the Del Mar line of putters over the years from Scotty.

Mallet for me. I have a blade (Scotty Studio Stainless center shaft prototype) that I go to from time to time, but mostly it's a mallet for me.

I guess I am a "mid" mallet guy. I game 2013 Limited Release Del Mar. Given the toe hang, maybe it's considered more of a blade?

I like the ability to "deaden" putts off the toe on severe downhill putts. I don't feel that this can be achieved with a true face balanced mallet putter.

I've always preferred blades. I've been using my Scotty Cameron Studio Stainless for over 20 years.

I changed to a Scotty Cameron 5.5 in 2022. It's the best move I've made for my putting!
