Planning a trip to the Tidewater soon, and I've never been there. Suggestions for courses? Really anywhere in VA Beach, Chesapeake, Suffolk would be great.

Been a few years but TPC of Virginia Beach, Heron Ridge. Hell's point used to be a decent course but I've heard some mediocre remarks in regard to it.

Okay, this recommendation comes from an online buddy of mine who lives in VB. Hope this helps. I have not played there myself, but I trust the guy who gave me the info. His info follows:

"1) Signature at Westneck - Arnold Palmer course. Also Marc Leishman's home course.
T2) Virginia Beach National - Pete Dye course. It's normally in good shape.
T2) Heron Ridge - Freddy Couples designed course. Owned by the same people that own VB National above.

They all range from $60-$80 in season. The decision between VB National and Heron Ridge: Everyone I know who cuts the ball likes Heron Ridge better. Everyone I know who draws the ball likes VB National better.

Best budget course in VB is Red Wing Lakes. It's a muni course, the greens wont be perfect but they'll be better than most munis. The course is pretty easy. It is also one of the few that doesn't have any houses in play on any hole.

Oh if you want the true VB golf experience (ie F18 Hornets flying over in your back swing) it's VB National or Red Wing Lakes, depending on the flight pattern that day. I mean you'll get this on any of the VB courses, but those 2 are closest to Oceana so they'll be a lot lower in their flight over those 2 courses.

Near Virginia Beach I've heard really good things about Cahoon Plantation in Chesapeake about 30 min away. I've not played it yet (it's going to be my next new course in the area that I do play). A lot of people really like it (more so than the VB courses)."

    Virginia Beach:
    VB National
    Signature @ Westneck
    Heron Ridge

    Suffolk:
    Nansemond River
    Riverfront

    Chesapeake:
    Cahoon Plantation

    Williamsburg:
    Golden Horseshoe
    Colonial Heritage
    Kingsmill
    Ford’s Colony
  5. The TPC of VA Beach is now called Virginia Beach National Golf Club. Can't remember how and why it changed names, but it did. I worked out there while it was a TPC for about a year. Long but nice track.
Heron Ridge is nice. I played Signature at West Neck right when they opened, but that was a long time ago. Seemed tight on many holes.
Cahoon Plantation, located in Chesapeake is cool too. Bent grass from tee to green are awesome.
Smaller city run tracks were decent and cheap, but tight.
Red Wing Lake Golf Course in Va Bch is very nice too. Loud from sorties off Naval Air Station, but adds to the round.

TPC of VB is now Virginia Beach National and it an excellent course, personally I like the Signature at West Neck I think it is the best non Private course at the Beach, it is a Arnold Palmer Signature course. Hells point has gone down hill a bit and tends to be very wet. Another great course is Herron Ridge it is a Freddy Couple signature course and although I have not played it in while it was always in great shape. One last course is Riverfront in Suffolk I would rank it right behind the Signature at Westneck. No matter what you choose you should have a great time.

    Cheers,
    Jeff
  7. Hi JShelton. Should be great trip; the Virginia Beach and greater Tidewater region have a lot to offer. While I can't vouch for any courses in the immediate VA Beach/Chesapeake/Suffolk area, I would highly recommend the Golden Horseshoe Gold Course and Kingsmill River Course in Williamsburg, VA. It would be about an hour's drive from VA Beach, but is well worth the journey (in my humble opinion). The Golden Horseshoe Green Course and Kingsmill Plantation Course are also options, but fall a grade below their more storied counterparts. Regardless of where you end up playing, have a great time.
