I currently play a blade scotty cameron special select. I love it. But have been wanting to try a mallet version (Phantom X). From personal experience, what are the benefits of a blade compared to a mallet? I've only ever played a blade.

I'm currently a 6 handicap and rarely 3 putt, but I am human and it happens from time to time.

Just curious on peoples experiences and what they play with!

You could always consider a mid mallet. It all depends on your stroke and where you play and what you practice with regularly. I am a mid mallet guy and average 26 putts/round but have played one since the Red came out and practice with one almost every day. You can get fitted or borrow one from your local club or friend for a round and see if you want to commit to it. I think it is all about practicing and consistency.

I started out playing golf with a blade and putted well with it. I made the decision about 7 years ago to switch to a mallet. I’ve loved playing mallets but always missed the blade. Something about a mallet gave me more confidence. In the last 2 years I have probably been through 7 or 8 mallet putters. Last month I decided to go back to a blade but just don’t have the confidence setting up. After all the switching putters last week went and finally got a putter fitting and low and behold the one putter I owned at one time and felt I putter great with but of course sold was the Fastback 1.5. Needless to say I ordered that day with the customizations I need for it and hopefully will never look back. My advice is go get a fitting before spending the money on something you may not like a few rounds in with. Good luck with it!

I tried a few different styles but landed on the mid mallet Del Mar. Just got my eye and my game. I find it to be the best of both worlds.

I use the best of both worlds. I recently got my hands on a Concept X which is models the newport but with "hidden wings" on the edges. I'll let you know how it goes.

I’ve been playing blade for years. Tried playing mallet but it threw me off a little bit. Added some higher gram-ed weights to my Scotty and it’s Better than ever

the best putter for you is the one that is fitted for you whether that's a blade or mallet! I would love to go SC mallet!

I'm currently playing a blade but have experimented with mallet over the last few years latest being phantom x 11.5.

    Pros of Mallet,
    1. Relatively straight forward to aim with all the guides available
    2. More success with putts within say 5 meters

    Cons of Mallet,
    1. Struggle with distance with longer putts
    2. Sometimes massive sightline can be more of a distraction
    3. I carry a smaller size stand bag and the massive head size blocks the handle used to pick up the bag and I refuse putting the putter where the wedges are...
    4. Random push like 30 degrees right... Still haven't figured this out... but improved with .5 slant necks that has toe hang

I've played a Scotty Newport2 blade putter for over 20 years. Switched to Phantom X 5 last year and now Im back to NP2.
  12. I’ve played Scotty blades or mid mallets since 2010 with no issues. I got an x5.5 December 2021 and it had six months in the bag before I went back to my t22 newport. The x5.5 is getting another go currently. Pros and cons?

Pros - I seem to make more distance putts with the mallet and it’s automatic on short putts.

Cons - distance control is worse with the mallet. With my blades I won’t hole many long putts but 99% of the time it’s a tap in. With the mallet I hole more longer putts but when I get it wrong, I blow it a few feet past the hole.

I certainly have more three putts with the mallet compared to the blade, but I also more birdies with the mallet too. Currently undecided whether I should give up on this experiment and go buy a Newport two.

I also have a 5.5 at 34” and found distance control an issue - it seems on longer putts there is too much “MOI” if that makes sense. I replaced the weights with 5 gram weights and I have more control over the distances but didn’t seem to lose stability . For me , it still a club and requires a swing
