  1. I am a 2 handicap with 90-95 club head speed. I have been a long user of pro v1 golf balls. But now with the new pro v1x I have greater distance. I am just fearing I will loose short game control and spin. Should I switch? Hat really are the key differences and why is the pro v1x so popular of it does not spin as much?

    Hi Mark,

    Thanks for the post.

When it comes to selecting a golf ball, it is imperative to find a ball that works from green-to-tee. Both the Pro V1 and Pro V1x are long, it is more important to determine which model gives you more control going into the green and around the green.

Try both out side-by-side and make a decision based off that comparison.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

To me, the main difference is how much you as a player spin the ball on your scoring shots--approaches to the green, pitches, and chips.  Players who can generate a lot of spin with their swing, probably have better results with the Pro V1x since it will not spin as much as the Pro V1 on those shots.

I have to agree with Bubba that the only way for you to determine which is best for you is a side by side comparison.  I used the Pro V1x for several years, until a side by side comparison showed me that the Pro V1 was a better fit for me.  I do not generate a lot of spin on my scoring shots, rarely getting a ball to back up or stop exceptionally quickly.  I have more success doing that with the Pro V1, than with the Pro V1x, so I switched and now play only the Pro V1.

How much distance do you think you are gaining? The max you could possibly be gaining would be 5 yards, that is according to Titleist Reps at a Ball Demo Day, and last years ball. The new Pro V1 and 1X are even closer. Unless its a club difference, which is extremely unlikely, stay with what you have. If they were a club longer, do you think any of the Pro's would be playing the ProV1?

After meeting with the Titleist fitter about a year and ago I switched to the Prov1 based on his recommendation. I used to play the Prov1x. Have not lost any distance and it performs extremely well for me around the green. My new 915D2 accessories it nicely. A match made in heaven.

I tell you what, if I took both ballscovered up the pro v part, you couldnt tell the difference. Ive heard tour players say they cant tell the difference, im sure us normal players cant. If you are not Tour Players, the difference in distance and/or spin is not going to make a bit of difference to your game.

As Bubba recommended try both side by side and pick whichever one fits your game best. I have played the proV1 since they came out, yet this year after trying both I switched to the proV1x, still get great feel and spin.

Don't forget about putting either. The ProV1 feels softer off my putter than the ProV1x. Putting is about feel, so compare and see what you like best. Good luck.

Hi guys! I started playing the original Pro V1 when it first came out, so many years ago. At that time, I was a fairly good player [3 handicap] and hit the ball a pretty long way. The first time I hit the Pro V, I was amazed at the additional distance I gained; but more so how straight the ball went. I was very good around the greens at that time; but as years went bye, I started losing distance, and switched to the X trying to find it back. I gained most of what I lost with this ball, and haven't lost any of the feel I had around the greens. The only difference I can see, is from 180 to 165 in. I'm no longer a perfectionist, nor may I be exact; but I think I may have lost a foot or three of stopping power at this distance. Then again, my swing speed has decreased somewhat, and this could be the cause. Either way, either ball, at least to me; is exceptional!

Guess I will weigh in with my "I was told" answer. Was at Oceanside recently and my fitter said the only real difference is lower spin with the longer clubs. Once you get around the green, both balls are pretty much equals

As a long time ProV1x player I always keep about 6 ProV1s in my bag. Normally I get all the stopping power I need from the x. There are times at certain courses (very firm fast greens) I'll switch to the ProV1.  i find I get a bit more bite going into the green. especially on courses where I have to hit over bunkers or water and stop it fast.

That said my Head Pro always tells me "A ball rolling to the hole has a chance to go in, one that lands and stops won't". I play the X because I can stop it off the short irons with no problem. and still have the control I need on partial shots around the green.

To me they both spin just fine with the short stick and I think the prov1x spins a far bit less with the driver.  But for me the feel on the green when Im putting is all about the prov1x. Im far more consistent with the Pvov1x and so thats what i play. If i wanted a softer feel from my putts i would use the prov1 and adjust to the ball flight with the long clubs.

What a great conversation thread. This question comes up so often on various threads and is one I struggle with myself. I understand and agree that the ProV1 is softer and spins more around the green. I also think it feels softer/better off of the putter. However, one thing I've never understood is what the spin rate difference means off the tee or with the longer irons. My impression is that if you have a power fade/slice, you're better off with the ProV1x as it will reduce the side spin and the short game performance is close enough that you're better off with the benefits with the longer shots. Bubba, if you could help clarify, I would appreciate it. If that weren't the case, there wouldn't be so many post/discussions on the subject. When you compare packaging, one says "Long", the other "Longer". One "Soft", the other "Softer".

    Scott,

    Thanks for the post.

The Pro V1x is designed to have less long game spin than the Pro V1m whereas the Pro V1 has a softer feel. When it comes to saying which ball is best for a certain player, it is very important to test both balls on the course. For example, one person may hit the Pro V1 longer off the tee because they tend to be low spin and the extra spin helps them increase carry distance, and vice versa for someone who is high spin.

You are correct, an individual who tends to have a pronounced slice may benefit from a lower spinning ball off the tee. However, if that individual tends to miss a lot of greens, it is more important to have a ball that gives them good short game control.

    Hope this helps.

  15. I have a 6 handicap and i find the PRO Vis the most consistent ball especially on fast greens

I am a 10 handicap and have tried both as well. I keep going back to the Pro V1. I like to put the ball back in my stance and stop the ball with spin rather than loft, when possible. I have tried the Pro V1 versus the B330Rx and higher compression balls, the Pro V1x, and others. The Pro V1 seems to me to check better than anything. The old Taylor Made Penta 5 layer was the closest thing I could find but nothing rivaled the Pro V1.

    Mark,

I too play to the low singles and have a similar swing speed.  I use the Pro v1x  because I find it to be longer off the tee with much less side spin.  Around the greens ie 100 yards in I find it spins even more than the Pro v1.  I can skip it to a stop on half wedges and spin it back on full swings up to an 8 iron.  Give it a try and enjoy.

I'm a 3.4 index - love both v1 and the X, have found them VERY similar - seems like a bit more distance on the X and conversely a bit more spin on the "v1" .

    Two thoughts:

    1. In my old MX racing days, we said "if it makes you FEEL fast" - do it !

    2. In the current marketing world - if it makes you FEEL good - go for it  !

I like the RED number vs the BLACK number - and it makes me FEEL good and fast!

We are lucky to play with such great equipment - the stuff my grandfather (Graham Jackson) played with were not exactly round.          He was defending champ at his clubs in Winnipeg CANADA and Deerfeild Beach FL - I believe multiple years  1972 & 1975

Mark, I have a similar club head speed of 92 mph as an 11 hdcp. I am challenged to hit greens with the slower swing speed . You must make it up with your short game.  Has the golf ball made a difference. Thanks ,  Steve

i too use the pro v1x  for the distance but i as well think they do not bite as much on the green but still not to swich they are worth it

I have tried the Pro V1 and the Pro V1x side by side following a Titleist ball fitting session at my club where the Pro V1x was recommended due to the lower spin. I hit the Pro V1x straighter hence more fairways hit. I did not see any difference in distance or short game control. I play off 13 and hitting the fairway off the tee is crucial to a good round for me.
