Scottie Scheffler Emerges Victorious from an All-Titleist Golf Ball Playoff at the Waste Management Phoenix Open

PGA TOUR | WM Phoenix Open

Scottie Scheffler rolled his Pro V1 golf ball in for birdie from 26 feet on the third hole of an all-Titleist golf ball playoff Sunday at TPC Scottsdale to win his first PGA TOUR title.

  • Scheffler, 25, birdied four of his final six holes in a closing 4-under 67 to force the playoff with Titleist Brand Ambassador and reigning FedEx Cup Champion Patrick Cantlay, who also posted 67 Sunday.
  • Scheffler’s 9-under 62 in Saturday’s third round – a nine-birdie, no-bogey effort – was the best of the week by two shots.
  • He made 17 birdies over his final 36 holes of regulation, 12 of them coming on TPC Scottsdale’s back nine.
  • For the week, Scheffler finished fourth in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee (+5.226) and eighth in SG: Around the Green (+2.776).
  • Through two rounds this week, Scheffler was T-44. Only 1.4 percent of PGA TOUR winners since 200 have been T-44 or lower through 36 holes.
  • In his last six starts on the PGA TOUR, Cantlay has finished T-4 or better four times, including two wins.
  • His worst finish over that stretch – in which he has a 66.9 scoring average and is a cumulative 113 under par – is 9th (American Express).
  • He has made birdie or better on 33.3% of holes played over his last 24 PGA TOUR rounds.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER ON HIS PRO V1

  • Scottie Scheffler made the switch to the 2021 Pro V1 golf ball at the beginning of last season in Kapalua, moving from his prior generation Pro V1 model. 
  • “I found the new (2021 Pro V1) to be a little bit faster and a little bit softer cover. I was nipping it a little more around the greens, and then I picked up a couple miles per hour with the driver, so it was a good change,” Scheffler said. “The aerodynamics were also better. The ball was more stable in the wind, but I could still put the amount of curve that I needed to put on the golf ball. A lot of times when the wind’s blowing really hard, you’ve got to really hold the ball against the wind as well. So you still need to be able to put some curve on that golf ball and control it with it also being stable in the wind. And I found that the new ball was a little bit better and a little bit more stable.”

SAHITH THEEGALA ON HIS PRO V1

  • Rookie Sahith Theegala, playing a Pro V1 golf ball, earned the best finish of his 11-event old PGA TOUR career, finishing T3 at 15 under, one shot out of the playoff.
  • Theegala, 24, who graduated from Pepperdine in 2020 as college golf’s player of the year, made 24 birdies over the four rounds at TPC Scottsdale (ranking second).
  • “The new Pro V1 has been great for me,” said Theegala, who switched from 2019 Pro V1x to 2021 Pro V1 at the beginning of the 2021 Korn Ferry Tour season. “I just love how it feels. Especially for me, the feel around the greens is really important. So I love how soft the ball feels around the greens, but I’m still able to get a bunch of spin while knocking down the spin with my irons and driver, because I’m high spin with those. Around the greens, I still feel like it gives me the same performance as the X, and able to pretty much put whatever spin I want on it. So it’s been great, never played a better ball.” 

CHAMPION TRIUMPHS WITH NEW SCOTTY CAMERON PUTTER

  • The winner of the WM Phoenix Open put a new Scotty Cameron Newport 2-style putter in play for the first time this week at TPC Scottsdale, on his way to leading the field in putts per green in regulation (1.66) and ranking second for the week in Strokes Gained: Putting (+6.49).
  • He made 44.7% of his birdie attempts for the week, which was third-best in the field. 
  • The WMPO champ added the Special Select Timeless Tourtype GSS tour prototype to his bag this week following a December trip to the Scotty Cameron Putter Studio, where he worked with Scotty Cameron Tour Rep Brad Cloke.
  • He had previously been using a Newport-style Super Rat 1 tour prototype. (Newport is the softer, rounder counterpart to the Newport 2.)
  • “He just wanted to switch things up a little bit and give himself a slightly different look heading into 2022,” Cloke said. “Prior to visiting us in the Studio, he’d been messing around with an older Newport 2 Timeless he had at home. He’d added bunch of lead tape to the sole to try and get it to a similar swingweight as his Super Rat. He really liked the profile but the feel wasn’t exactly where he wanted it, so we went to work on building him a new setup with adjustable weighting.”
  • The WMPO Champ played his first two events of the season with the Newport 2 Timeless tour prototype as he waited for his new Special Select Timeless Tourtype GSS – with a finished length of 36 ¼ inches, and two 25g adjustable weights in the sole – to be ready.
  • The new putter arrived at his doorstep last week. It’s now 1-for-1 on the PGA TOUR, following his 26-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole on Super Sunday.

KORN FERRY TOUR | Astra Golf Championship

Titleist swept every major equipment category at the Astra Golf Championship, with more players choosing Titleist golf balls, drivers, fairways, hybrids, utility irons, irons, wedges and putters than any other brand.

  • The winner of the event played a TSi3 15.0° fairway metal. 

PGA TOUR AUSTRALASIA | Victoria Open

Titleist Brand Ambassador Dimi Papadatos posted a flawless 6-under 66 Sunday at 13th Beach Golf Links to win by one and qualify for this summer’s Open Championship at St Andrews.

  • Papadatos – playing a full bag of Titleist equipment, including Pro V1x golf ball and TSi3 driver – led a group of three Titleist golf ball players who earned invitations to the Old Course in July, along with runner-up, Titleist Brand Ambassador Ben Campbell (Pro V1), and third-place finisher Matt Griffin (Pro V1x).

Alexander Knappe (Pro V1) played the weekend perfectly, making 10 birdies without a bogey, including a final birdie Sunday on the par-5 18th, to win by one shot.

  • Knappe posted rounds of 65-67-66-68 for a 23 under total at Fancourt.
  • “Fancourt is like a home for me. I live here on the estate. The three courses here are so good to practice on and get ready for tournaments,” Knappe said. “South Africa is really lovely, and George is special to me… In 2015 I saw this tournament, and in 2016 I played in it for the first time and finished third. I’ve just always wanted to win this tournament.”
