Titleist golf ball loyalist Ryan Moore (Pro V1x) won the John Deere Classic on Sunday, closing with a 4-under-par 67 for a two-stroke victory over Titleist Brand Ambassador Ben Martin (Pro V1x).
Moore opened with three consecutive 65’s and played the entire 72 holes with just one bogey (including none over the final 46 holes).
“Every win is a little different,” said Moore after the win, his fifth on the PGA TOUR. “This one was -- I liked how steady it was. This is the kind of golf that I feel like I can play. Just really solid, really steady. No bogeys on the weekend.”
He posted a 22-under-par 262 victory total to secure his first win since successfully defending his CIMB Classic title in Malaysia in 2014.
Moore received some unique motivation this week from his son, Tucker, who mapped out a scoring goal before each round.
“The first day, he told me to make eight birdies, Moore explained. “And honestly, he's three years old, he has no idea what he's telling me. But he told me to make eight birdies. So that day, or first day was seven and then eight and then six.
The second round, I think I missed a 6-footer on the last hole to actually have eight birdies that day. So I was kicking myself walking off the green. I wasn't actually that mad about the round or the score. I just really wanted to make eight birdies so I could tell him afterwards I made eight birdies for him.
But yeah, that was kind of fun. It was something to keep my mind off it while I was out there. He just knows birdies are good, so might as well have a lot of them.”
Martin, who began the final round a stroke behind Moore, closed with a 3-under-par 68, which included three consecutive back nine birdies on holes 12 through 14.
Titleist Brand Ambassador Morgan Hoffmann (Pro V1) and Titleist golf ball loyalist Whee Kim (Pro V1) tied for 3rd place at 17-under-par as each of the top four finishers relied upon Titleist golf balls for their success. In fact, Moore topped a leaderboard that counted 10 Titleist golf ball players among the 13 who finished in the top 10 and ties.
Martin and Hoffmann were two of 12 players who combined to put 13 new Titleist 917F prototype fairway metals into play the first week they were available on tour. That is 27 percent of all Titleist fairways in play (48) at the John Deere Classic.
TITLEIST BY THE NUMBERS
Titleist was the top choice in golf balls with 109 players trusting a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success at TPC Deere Run, more than seven times the nearest competitor with 15 and more than all competitors combined.
Titleist also led the way in the hybrids (30) and irons (43) categories.
Titleist Vokey Design Wedges topped the approach, sand and lob wedge (202) category as did Scotty Cameron putters in the putter (62) category.
