Titleist Pro V1 and Pro V1x players swept all three events held last week around the world. With January 2021 now in the books, a total of 1,836 players have teed up a Titleist golf ball so far this year, more than eight times the nearest competitor with 219. Titleist golf ball players combined for 16 wins last month, compared to the nearest competitor with two.
All three winners also teed up a NEW TSi driver, with more new TSi models in play on the PGA TOUR and European Tour than any other driver.
EUROPEAN TOUR | Omega Dubai Desert Classic
Paul Casey (Pro V1) claimed his 15th European Tour title, closing in 2-under 70 for a four-shot victory.
- Casey was one of four Titleist golf ball players in the top five, including Brandon Stone who finished runner-up playing NEW Pro V1.
- Kalle Samooja also teed up NEW Pro V1, finishing tied for fourth with Laurie Canter (Pro V1).
- The win pushed Casey inside the Top 15 of the Official World Golf Ranking for the first time since December 2019.
CHAMPION CHOOSES TSi
The winner was one of 36 players in the field playing a NEW TSi driver, with 41 percent of those players teeing up TSi without an agreement. He made the switch to the new model (TSi3 9.0°, Mitsubish Diamana D+ Limited 70 TX, 44.5”), along with a new TSi2 16.5° fairway metal (Mitsubish Diamana D+ Limited 80 TX, 42.5”), last week at The American Express following extensive offseason testing.
- “I've switched drivers. So part of the reason for the good performance the last two weeks, I finished 8th last week in California and then obviously win today,” he said in his post-victory press conference. “I put a new driver in, and I don't often talk about equipment, but I put a Titleist driver in the bag. Don't ask me the exact specs, TSi3 or something like that. But I feel like I’m driving the golf ball like I did when I was playing my best golf, when I was 3 in the world or whatever, and that's – I feel like this rejuvenation.”
- On Sunday, he averaged 313 yards (8th) off the tee while hitting 79% of his fairways (2nd). For the week, he finished T-8 in Strokes Gained Off the Tee.
- “He reached out to us over the offseason and said he’d heard a lot of really good things about the driver,” said Titleist Tour Rep J.J. Van Wezenbeeck. “We were going back and forth on phone and text, I was building different options and shipping them to him, and then getting feedback. He was really impressed with the ball speeds he was getting with TSi3, but the big thing for him was the overall performance. The driver he was playing last year, he felt that when he missed it, his misses were big. With TSi3, the misses were really tight. He loved the head shape and the feel, but it was that total performance package that really stood out.”
- Upon arrival this week at Emirates Golf Club, he worked with Titleist European Tour Rep Liam McDougall on a couple driver adjustments – changing the SureFit hosel setting from A•1 to B•2, and moving the SureFit CG track from neutral to H1 – to lower his ball flight in preparation for the windy week in Dubai, while promoting a more right-to-left shape.
- “We were able to move his strike location through adjustments to the SureFit hosel and CG weight, which brought his flight down and helped him turn the ball over a fraction more,” McDougall said. “The new setup also helped even more with his misses and minimizing the slight curve to the right.”
PGA TOUR
Farmers Insurance Open: Patrick Reed (Pro V1) closed in 4-under 68 Sunday at Torrey Pines, making birdie on 18 to complete a five-shot victory for his 9th PGA TOUR title.
Reed, who ranked first for the week in Strokes Gained: Around the Green, topped a leaderboard featuring four Titleist golf ball players in the top six, with Ryan Palmer (NEW Pro V1x), Tony Finau (Pro V1) and Victor Hovland (Pro V1) among the five players who tied for second.
- It was Reed’s fourth win with Pro V1, following his switch from a competitive model in the weeks leading up to his victory at the 2018 Masters.
- A total of 109 players in the field teed up a Titleist golf ball, more than six times the nearest competitor with 18.
CHAMPION CHOOSES TSi
Titleist continues to be the preferred driver on the PGA TOUR, with 49 players teeing up Titleist drivers at the Farmers Insurance Open, 16 more than the nearest competitor.
- The winner [Titleist TSi3 9.0, Aldila Rogue Silver 70 TX] was one of 45 players to tee up a NEW TSi model, and one of 14 players to do so without an agreement.
- TSi was also the choice of the champion at this week’s Omega Duba Desert Classic on the European Tour.
- A combined total of 88 players played Titleist drivers across both events, with 91% being new TSi2, TSi3 or TSi4 driver models. Of those players choosing to play new a TSi driver, 35 percent (14 at Farmers, 14 at Dubai) did so without an agreement.
NEW WEDGE GRIND FOR ADAM SCOTT
Adam Scott put a new Vokey Design SM8 60.12D in the bag at Torrey Pines following a testing session with Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill last week at the Titleist Performance Institute. The new wedge replaced Scott’s low-bounce 60.06K, which he had been playing since 2012.
Dill said: “Adam chose the K Grind a long time ago because it’s such a good bunker club and extremely forgiving – and he stayed loyal to it for a long time. It takes a lot for Adam to switch into a new wedge, but he wanted to test options that gave him more performance from the fairway, and made it easier to flight the ball lower while keeping his spin high. The sole on the K Grind he had been using makes that difficult, because it has a low bounce angle. The D Grind has a high bounce angle, so it makes sure that the ball hits the lower parts of the face, making the spin go up and the flight go down."
“Over time Adam found that with his old gamer he became a little bit more aware of how he swung the club, and wasn’t being as aggressive as he wanted to be. So instead of just thumping the ground and hitting a good shot, he had to be a little bit more cautious about how he hit it. The new setup freed him up to swing a little faster and harder, hit the ground a little harder and get that low launch and high spin he wanted.”
ZALATORIS ADDS UTILITY
Will Zalatoris (Pro V1) earned his fourth Top 10 of the 2020-21 season with a new utility iron, trading in his hybrid for a Titleist U•500 3-iron (Nippon NS Pro Modus 3 GOST). Zalatoris made the change after a session at the Titleist Performance Institute with Titleist Tour Rep Dino Antenucci, remarking on the increased control and ability to flight it.
